Saturday evening, a beer mug in your hand and you are watching TV, sounds familiar isn’t it :-)
Well this is not what the blog is about, but very closely related. Most of the time when you have the mug in your hand, suddenly some new threads are spawned in the back of your head and you become “extra” creative\productive and start thinking about current issues, sci-fi topics, movies etc. etc.; you don’t want to leave any of them. Of course the level of creativity is directly proportional to v\v of alcohol in the drink and the personal consumption level ;-)
But the funny thing is that I could retain one thread from that all and would like to write about it and know what other people feel in that context. Ya, the movie was “koi Mil Gaya” you can also think of E.T if you are a Spielberg fan. In the movie, one thing I could easily see was that the alien was “communicating” with our hero. By communication, I not only mean language but also reading of feeling; joy, sadness etc. etc. It’s a nice concept and opens up a completely new world for us to explore; no doubt about it. Countries are spending billions on researches and trying to figure out if there is life on planets other than earth, specially mars is an attraction for them. Guess there are also experiments to find out ways to communicate with them. ya ya I know, don’t worry I am not going to summarize the national geographic, history and other sci-fi channels programs here :-)
My point is ‘suppose” if we find someone out there, what next?
Can we communicate with them? How long would it take for us to decipher their ways and gestures? Would we interpret it right the first time or would we end up in a situation like “Independence Day” ? no no, I am not a pessimistic person but the fact is that have we been able to communicate with all the creatures on our planet itself? I am not a very up-to-date as far as scientific experiments and news is concerned but I try my best to catch up on the national geographic, history, some online magazines etc. but I didn’t stumble upon anything talking about communicating with the other species around; note this doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen and I would be glad if someone points me to some related resource.
To be slightly more precise, I could see lot of videos talking about studies around ant, honey bee behavioral patterns and communications, studies around how mosquitoes adapted the lifecycles of our earth and who can forget the masterpiece “Jurassic Park”, but are we still able to plug-in in their communication channels? Can we exchange some information with them and either understand their way or communicate ours back to them? Don’t even want to “mention” a completely different dimension on communication between the so called most intelligent of them all, we humans; humans across the geographical and cultural boundaries :-)
So on a more serious note, if we are still in RnD phase (assumption: if I don’t know anything doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist) on establishing this communication which maybe categorized as the basic, wonder how we would react to the more complex one involving the aliens? Want to leave this question open on this blog for your inputs…
